1. (a) (i)) One of the applications of dimension is to give the units of a physical quantity. Determine the SI unit of Universal gas constant (R) in the equation

PV = n RT Where P, V, n and T carry their usual meanings

(ii)Why dimensional analysis can not be a sure way of checking the correctness of the formula

(b)(i) In an experiment to determine acceleration due to gravity(g) using simple pendulum time (t) for a certain length (L) was measured three times and the average value of g was then calculated. Explain why?

(ii) Two resistors R1 of 2.2 ± 0.1Ω and R2 of 8.0 ± 0.2Ω are connected in series and then in parallel. Find the numerical value of equivalent resistance in each case

2. (a) (i)Give two limitations of projectile motion

(ii)A body is projected with a speed of 15ms-1 at an angle 300 with the vertical to pass just above the wall of 5m height. Find the width of a wall

(b) (i) Is every moving body accerelates? Explain

(ii) On hitting a window glass a stone smashes the glass while a bullet passes by making a clean wall. Explain

3. (a) (i) Give two characteristics of parking orbit satellites

(ii)What minimum additional speed must be imparted to a satellite travelling in a circular orbit close to the surface of the earth so that it escapes the gravitational pull of the earth

(b) (i) Give two factors affecting the accuracy of acceleration due to gravity using simple pendulum

(ii) A bob of simple pendulum moves simple harmonically with amplitude of 8cm and period of 2s.If the motion is undamped calculate maximum value of speed and kinetic energy of the bob if its mass is 50g.

4. (a) (i) A solid sphere and a solid cylinder which are identical, each is rotating about its Z axis. Which one of them can easily be stopped? Explain

(ii)A car of 900kg is moving in a circular path of radius 300m with a steady speed of 72km/h. Calculate its angular momentum

(b) A 15kg object and a 10kg object are suspended joined by a cord that passes over a pulley with a radius of 10cm and a mass 3kg.The pulley rotates on its axis without friction .The objects starts from rest while at 3cm apart .Treat the pulley as a uniform disc then determine the speed of two objects as they pass each other

5. (a) Give a reason for the following

(i) At least two fixed points are required to define a temperature scale

(ii) Two thermometers using different thermometric properties and calibrated at two fixed points would not necessarily show the same temperature except at fixed points

(b) (i) Give two ways of increasing sensitivity of mercury in glass thermometer

(ii)A faulty thermometer has its fixed points marked 50C and 950. What is the correct temperature in Celsius scale when this thermometer reads 59 0C
